Merseyside police were unable to take action against Instagram users who racially abused Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Naby Keita after they were found based outside the UK.
The monkey emojis were sent to both players on 6 April following Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.
Offensive comments were removed from Instagram and reported to the police.
Merseyside police said Sky Sports News they closed their investigation because all the offending users were traced outside the UK.
A police spokesperson said: “Following a full investigation, all of the perpetrators were identified from their social media accounts, but all were based abroad, so no further steps were taken.”
